New Trier Rugby’s Developmental Tour to Ireland
When New Trier Rugby Club set off from Chicago in late March, it wasn’t just the start of an overseas trip, it was the beginning of a transformational rugby journey in Ireland.
Over 10 days, 82 travellers, including 33 players, coaches, and passionate parents and supporters, immersed themselves in one of the world’s most iconic rugby nations.
This inspiresport rugby tour blended elite competition, cultural discovery, and unforgettable shared experiences. Showcasing exactly why Ireland remains a standout destination for rugby tours.
Landing in Ireland
Touching down in Dublin before heading to Cork, the group were immediately introduced to the warmth and hospitality of Irish culture.
Cork, known as one of Ireland’s rugby heartlands, became the base for the first half of the tour. Over five nights in the city, players settled in, bonded as a group, and prepared for the competitive challenges ahead.
Testing Themselves Against Ireland’s Best
On day three, the rugby began.
New Trier faced a series of high-level fixtures against prestigious Irish school opposition, playing 3 games against Christian Brothers College, Presentation Brothers College and Crescent College. This international experience pushed the group beyond their comfort zone and introduced them to a different style of play.
More importantly, these weren’t just fixtures, they were true rugby exchanges. The team had the opportunity to learn from their Irish counterparts, adapting new skills and tactics that they could incorporate into their own game.
Post-match meals hosted by the opposition allowed players to connect, share stories, and experience the traditions that make rugby so special.
For many players, these moments left just as lasting an impression as the matches themselves.
Learning From the Sidelines
Development didn’t stop at their own games.
The group also had the opportunity to spectate high-quality rugby, attending fixtures such as Highfield RFC vs Blackrock College RFC and Old Belvedere RFC vs Nenagh Ormond RFC.
Watching live rugby in Ireland offered valuable insights into the game, helping players better understand tactics, structure, and decision-making at different levels. These experiences allowed them to reflect on their own performances and develop new approaches to enhance their game.
Discovering Ireland
What elevates an international rugby tour is everything that happens off the pitch and at inspiresport, the itinerary is designed to deliver exactly that.
In Cork, the group enjoyed a guided tour of Kinsale, one of Ireland’s most picturesque towns, offering a glimpse into the country’s rich history and coastal beauty.
Players also visited Blarney Castle and Gardens, experiencing one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks while enjoying some well-earned downtime between fixtures.
The second half of the tour shifted to Dublin, where the cultural experience deepened. Highlights included:
- A behind-the-scenes Croke Park stadium tour, exploring the home of Gaelic sport
- A hands-on Gaelic Games experience, introducing players to hurling and Gaelic football
The team also had time to explore Dublin’s vibrant city centre, immersing themselves in the city’s culture, historic landmarks, and lively atmosphere, creating a truly well-rounded experience.
A Tour That Brought Everyone Together
One of the defining features of this tour was the size and energy of the travelling group.
With over 40 supporters making the journey, it became more than just a team tour, it was a full club experience.
At inspiresport, we pride ourselves on creating tours that are inclusive of families and supporters, helping to build an environment where players feel supported throughout. This shared experience strengthens not only the team, but the wider club community.

Why Tours Like This Matter
For young athletes, development goes far beyond training sessions or match results.
Tours like this provide the opportunity to:
- Experience new playing styles
- Adapt to unfamiliar environments
- Build confidence through challenge
- Gain perspective beyond their home club
By stepping into Irish rugby culture, New Trier players gained insights and experiences that simply can’t be replicated at home.
Heading Home
As the group returned to Chicago, they brought back far more than match experience.
They returned with stronger bonds as a team, a deeper understanding of international rugby, and memories that will last a lifetime.
This is what defines a successful international rugby tour, and we are proud to have been part of this journey.
