Elite Guest Speakers and Development Sessions
A powerhouse lineup of guest speakers headlined the development sessions, offering participants direct access to the knowledge and experience of some of the most respected names in the industry.
- Mike Phelan and Paul McGuinness, both former Manchester United figures, shared their perspectives on player development and team dynamics, built on their years of experience at the top level. Phelan, a trusted aide to Sir Alex Ferguson, delved into the modern game, granting players creative freedom and the danger of too much structure, while McGuinness focused on creating an effective youth and coaching department.
- Staff from the Premier League’s Coaching Standards Department provided insights into the structural side of the academy system, from playing and coaching philosophy principles of high performing academies, to building a successful coaching development program and coaching competency framework.
- Academy Directors Stuart Jones (Blackburn Rovers), Gareth Prosser (Everton), and Jonathan Hunter-Barrett (Wolves) shared a range of expertise of running effective, high level academy programs throughout the week.
These sessions offered a practical, interactive learning environment where attendees engaged with the speakers, discussed challenges, and gained insights into best practices. Academy and First Team Facility Access
A defining feature of the trip was the exclusive access to several elite facilities to give as much insight as possible into top-tier academy systems in the UK.
- City Football Academy (Manchester City): The cutting-edge City Football Academy facility highlighted why Manchester City is at the forefront of global soccer. Participants were lucky enough to receive a guided tour around the Etihad Campus, including the Etihad Stadium, thanks to inspiresport’s exclusive partnership with the club.
- St George’s Park: A full day at England’s national football center provided a deep dive into the technical and educational resources used by England’s national teams, Participants also as met and networked with high-caliber guests from P3RFORM and the League Manager’s Association (LMA), as well as exploring the rehabilitation facilities and advanced sports science technology that contribute to the success of English soccer.
- Finch Farm (Everton): A visit to another Premier League club’s training facilities to highlight some of the differences in club and team facilities, this time guided by Everton’s Academy Director, with the opportunity to watch an Everton Youth Team train.
- Compton Park (Wolves): During the full day Compton Park visit, the group observed U18 training, they were guided by the Wolves Academy Director and had chance to meet Wolves Academy Heads of Department and gain a holistic view of what it takes to run a Premier League Academy but then relate it back to their own experience in the USA.
- Blackburn Rovers’ Training Facility: With a longstanding tradition of developing young players, Blackburn’s training ground illustrated the club’s commitment to fostering future stars. The group had the opportunity to observe U21 training while receiving an insight into Blackburn’s development program.
Live Football Action: Three Memorable Matches
The trip would not have been complete without live Premier League, EFL and Champions League action, where attendees witnessed fantastic games and observed those at the pinnacle of the sport.
- Manchester United 2-1 Brentford: A thrilling home win for Manchester United gave participants insight into Old Trafford’s electric atmosphere, the group also indulged in pre-match hospitality at the MUFC legend-owned Hotel Football and met former Manchester United player, Norman Whiteside.
- Preston North End 2-2 Norwich City: This Championship clash was a testament to the competitive nature of English football, showcasing the quality and depth of English soccer and the different playing styles at a lower level.
- Manchester City 5-0 Sparta Prague: In a dominant performance by City, attendees were treated to a clinic on precision and creativity, gaining a closer understanding of the club’s tactical brilliance and player quality in Europe’s most elite competition, whilst sharing in pre-match hospitality.
